JC or Poly?

For many “O” Level students, the time has come to what could possibly be a life changing decision on your next course of studies. The dilemma – 2 Years Junior College “A” Level Program or 3 Years Polytechnic Diploma Course with a wide array of choices.

To help in your decision-making process, I thought of sharing some pros of cons of the JC and Poly route,

Junior College

(+)JC life is a natural progression from Secondary lifestyle and from the “O” Level based subjects

(+) Wider array of courses to choose in University

(+) Cheaper fees than Polytechnic

(+) Greater spots allocated for University Placements

(-) If you do not make it to University and leave with just an “A” Level cert, finding a proper job may be tough.

(-) May be stressful due to just 2 years of preparation before major exams. Results based on single major exam.

Poly

(+) Semester by semester grading and results not just determined by major exams.

(+) Great choice for students who are passionate about a specific field of studies.

(+) More practical skills

(+) A diploma is worth more than an “A” Level cert in the job market.

(-) Fees are more expensive than JC

(-) Longer route to achieving a certificate

(-) Greater competitiveness for University admission.

From my own personal experience, I was fixated on the Junior College path due my desire to pursue Maths and Sciences at a deeper level. Each student is different, choose your courses based on your likes and practicality and you will go a long way !

All the best !
